After the recent news about changes to government guidelines on wood-burning stoves we thought you'd like to know how to keep your wood buring stove buring efficiently...

You may have seen some alarming articles concerning changes to government guidelines on wood-burning stoves in recent days. Here are some of the Facts:

* Whilst 38% of particulates in our air come from burning wood this figure includes not only open fires and bonfires, but also pizza ovens, barbeque pits etc which have increased hugely in recent years. A stove can reduce particulate emissions by 90% compared to an open fire.

* Modern wood-burning stoves are approximately 80% efficient compared to only 30% for an open fire. These stoves now carry an energy efficiency label like any other appliance and are often A or A+.

* Unlike coal, gas and oil, woodburning stoves are carbon neutral, as the tree extracts compensating amounts of CO2 from the air as it grows.

Modern environmentally conscious countries like Norway and Sweden have used wood-burning stoves for many decades, acknowledging their part in a clean sustainable environment. If you had a modern efficient stove purchased from a reputable supplier and installed correctly, and if you are running it efficiently with properly dried wood don’t think you are part of the carbon monoxide environmental problem – you are part of the solution.
